语法学习中常常被忽视的it (1)

First, there is a riddle for you.

The following are the clues.

我，是英语语法中最不起眼的一个；

我，是由两个字母组成的；

我，本领高强，在IELTS中，你绝对少不了我。

Who Am I?

你能猜到吗？这个重要的，但通常被烤鸭们忽视的词就是it。

为什么it如此重要呢？Let’s take a look at the following sentence.

Overall, it could be observed from the flow chart that soil erosion, vegetation degradation and increased drought are major causes of biodiversity loss.

在这个关于流程图的作文中，这个句子里的it用法是怎么样的呢？

Actually，这句话中的it的作用是形式主语，后面由that引导的大长句 (soil erosion ... biodiversity loss) 是真正的主语从句。但是it的恰当使用使得整个句子更符合英文语言的特点，避免了“头重脚轻”的问题。

这种将it用作形式主语的句子，在我们的雅思写作中是非常common的，比如下面这两个作文中的句子：

On many occasions, it has been clearly shown that private secondary schools outperform their public counterparts in national and international exams. It is no wonder that parents are willing to pay high tuition fees.

（在很多情况下，私立高中在国内及国际性考试中的成绩都优于公立学校，难怪家长们愿意负担高额的学费。）

这两句话中的it，都被用作了形式主语。尤其第二句的It is no wonder that...（难怪...），是非常实用的表达方式。

比较常用的it用作形式主语的句式有：

It is said that...

（据说...）

It is universally acknowledged that...

（人们都知道...）

It is clearly illustrated from the chart that...

（图表清晰地表明...）

It can be concluded from the above discussion that...

（从上面的讨论中，我们可以得出如下结论...）

It is high time that ...

（真该到了...的时候了）

那么，除了可以作形式主语，it还有什么其他本领呢？
