警惕：英文写作的头号大敌

十个中国学生，九个都会犯的语法错误就是写run-on sentences.

如果你的雅思作文中频频出现下面这样的句子，那么写作中语法这一项的得分大概不会超过6分。

*It was late, we went home. (x)

*I love to write papers, I would write one every day if I had the time. (x)

*Getting married is easy, staying married is a difficult matter. (x)

以上是典型的run-on sentences：本来不可以用逗号连接的两个句子被这样简单粗暴地通过逗号连接在一起了。

避免和修改run-on sentences的关键是在于理解下面这个道理：在英语中，一个句子只能有一个谓语动词；当两个谓语动词出现时，就应该是两个句子（包括从句）。因此，要修改以上句子，正确的操作应该：

（1）使用分号连接两个句子：

• It was late; we went home.

• I love to write papers; I would write one every day if I had the time.

• Getting married is easy; staying married is a difficult matter.

（2）使用句号连接两个句子也可以，但是连接程度不如分号紧密：

• It was late. We went home.

• I love to write papers. I would write one every day if I had the time.

• Getting married is easy. Staying married is a difficult matter.

（3）使用并列连词，连接两个句子（此时两个句子地位相当，不分轻重）；

• It was late, so we went home.

• I love to write papers, and I would write one every day if I had the time.

• Getting married is easy, but staying married is a difficult matter.

（4）通过从属连词，把其中一个句子变成从句，另一个句子作为主句；

• Since it was late, we went home.

• Because I love to write papers, I would write one every day if I had the time.

• While getting married is easy, staying married is a difficult matter.
